Vasily Mahanenko's new LitRPG series set in the universe of his World of the Changed!
Modern times. Genius physicist Artyom Kuchaev found himself facing the darker side of the world we live in. Integrity is met with a laugh, the rat race instead full of people out to grab whatever they can. Where big money is on the line, no betrayal, even of loved ones, is a bridge too far. But Artyom couldnโt bring himself to conform. Instead, he decided to make a change in himself if not in the world around him. His work, surroundings, country...
However, the world wasnโt ready to let the genius go. It was benefiting too much from him. In one moment, everything was turned upside down: Artyomโs freedom was exchanged for prison, his noisy colleagues for morose cellmates, and his spacious labs for tiny offices in a restricted research institute. All that remained was his drive to make the world a better place. And that just left the tiny detail of how to actually make that happen.

Though connected to the authorโs other stories, this can very easily be read as a standalone story as it takes place in our modern world and it is meant to setup how all those other story universes started. On its own, it's a real life LitRPG story where a genius who plans to defect to the U.S. is kidnapped and finds himself part of a conclave of semi-immortal scientists that are forced to advance technology and research. It was interesting to read about the way people in power would take advantage of technology that included mind scanning, cloning, and artificial reality control systems.
Game mechanics come in the form of an interface that hands out quests and monetary rewards that can be traded for information, items, and other resources. Itโs nothing too new if youโve ever read any of the authors other stuff but this story sets up how it all starts.
Overall, while it can be read as a stand alone, I think readers of the authorโs Alchemist and World of the Changed series will appreciate it the most.

While Jasonโs personal enemies make plans, the greater foes plaguing his new home have been pushed to the brink. With one powerful card left to play, they are on a collision course with Jason and his team. With no one to help and more than their lives on the line, Jason and his companions must fight with more monsters than ever in the race to grow stronger. With an invincible enemy already anticipating them, they will learn that sometimes winning the battle is more important than surviving it.
My Opinion: 895 pages, $6.99, Available On Kindle Unlimited
Great action adventure with some surprising early story twists that put the main character (MC) in a different kind of trouble. The consequences were also carried through the story well and I was glad to see that the trouble changed the MC to a degree. There are some reader complaints about the end of the novel, the last 10% or so, which are either short side stories or brief setup stuff for future storylines. I understand the complaints but I didnโt mind as I understood that this novel is a collection of serial stories originally published online and as such you get this type of storytelling sometimes.

The Wastes are infested with herds of bloodthirsty necromorphs that devour every living thing in their path. A Dark Gateway has opened in the Stone Forest, allowing a horde of otherworldly monsters to come flooding through.
Adversaries from time immemorial are gathering armies and amassing forces. Ancient enemies are forming alliances. The world of the Great System stands once again on the precipice of change. A new war is coming.
My Opinion: 469 pages, $6.99, Available On Kindle Unlimited
Another romp through action and adventure. The story keeps pushing to expand the cast and scope of the story with larger problems, larger fights, and town building. It is still entertaining, but I noticed that I started to wonder where the series was going as I was reading. Though the English publisher says that thereโs only a book or two left in the series.
Overall, still a fine read but Iโm starting to feel the series drag a little.

My Opinion: 22 chapters, FREE, No English Publisher
A regressor story with an interesting twist, the main character (MC) doesnโt initially have access to any of the future knowledge he earned in his previous lives. Instead, he dies and ends up in a kind of mindscape where he talks to his past selves as they watch the latest incarnation struggle through life. That is until the current incarnation of the MC gets a random, trash ability that lets him connect with past memories. Itโs a good twist and there are good stakes for the MC without him being too OP as he gets involved in bigger and bigger plot lines, enemies, and allies.
