The Wandering Inn: Volume 3, Part 1
“No killing Goblins.”
So reads the sign outside of The Wandering Inn, a small building run by a young woman named Erin Solstice. She serves pasta with sausage, blue fruit juice, and dead acid flies on request. And she comes from another world. Ours.
It’s a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. She doesn’t belong in a place where monster attacks are a fact of life, and where Humans are one species among many. But she must adapt to her new life. Or die.
In a dangerous world where magic is real and people can level up and gain classes, Erin Solstice must battle somewhat evil Goblins, deadly Rock Crabs, and hungry [Necromancers]. She is no warrior, no mage. Erin Solstice runs an inn.
She’s an [Innkeeper].
My Opinion: 974 pages, $2.99, Not Available On Kindle Unlimited
The Wandering Inn is a serial story that’s published online and collected together for novels. Because of the format, there isn’t always a cohesive plot throughout. Instead, you get breaks from the main series characters and their adventures for fascinating novella length story arcs with one-off characters that may become more later. This may annoy some readers who prefer the traditional three act structure, but I adore every single chapter as the storytelling is gripping and the short story breaks add so much great world building.
In this volume in particular I really enjoyed the [Doctor] story that imagined what it would be like to be a medical student sent to this fantasy RPG world. The character didn’t have magical healing powers, only her medical knowledge and her own version of the hippocratic oath and more practice on the wounded than she ever imagined. It was a great speculative story that combined the RPG skill gains with a WWI kind of war with streams of wounded and limited resources to save lives.
The other story arcs were well told and interesting, though I’ll admit that they didn’t connect up like I’d expected at the outset, at least not in this volume. But the returning characters, especially Erin, were still delightful reads and the other new characters were fascinating and did much to world build.
Overall, the story telling is great and I enjoyed every minute of my multi-day read.
Score: 8 out of 10
The Wandering Inn: Volume 3 - Part 1
Isr Kale's Journal (The Alchemist Book #4): LitRPG Series
These were dark times for Tailyn Vlashich, the twelve-year-old alchemist. He’d been banished from the empire. The academy had summarily dismissed him. A deadly killer had been dispatched to hunt him. He’d been dropped all the way down to level one. But while there weren't many adults who would have been able to cope with the litany of problems Tailyn was facing, they weren’t him. And he had help—two mentors, his girl, and a friend. Not only that, but there was an ancient journal hidden somewhere in the academy dean’s office that held the secret to the location of the dragon’s blood. It was time to drop by and get their hands on it. All they had to do was clear one small hurdle: how were they going to get into the planet’s most heavily guarded building?
My Opinion: 323 pages, $6.99, Available On Kindle Unlimited
Full disclosure: I received an advanced copy for review. I purchased a copy when it became available.
The story takes a turn towards town building as the main character (MC) and his group find themselves struggling to survive and build power in a new city. The story is pretty slice of life with a few quest threads from previous books popping up and getting resolved towards the end of the story. But mostly, it’s the MC gathering funds, exploring old ruins for artifacts, and building up his power and the ancient town he’s become owner of. It really wasn’t until the very end of the novel that the shift to town building made sense in the story though. Overall, still an entertaining read but not my favorite book of the series.
Score: 7.3 out of 10
Isr Kale's Journal (The Alchemist Book #4): LitRPG Series
The World Is Full of Monsters Now, Therefor I Want to Live As I Wish
On his way home from his office, the main protagonist drove and ran over a big dog. At that moment, he heard the sudden sound of a voice inside his head. ≪ The monster has been subjugated, gaining experience points. ≫ 「Eh?」 Before anyone knew, the world has changed. Monsters appear, this is a game-like world where levels, skills, and status exist. This is an adventure where the modern world becomes fantasy and where the main protagonist has to strive hard for his survival.
My Opinion: 12 chapters +, Free, Fan Translated - No Official English Publisher
This is an RPG Apocalypse mana that’s been translated by fans. Because its a scanned manga, you need to read it from right to left. Like most RPG Apocalypse stories, the story focuses on how the main character (MC) survives, kills monsters, and deals with other survivors. The story, in general, is dark with lots of people being graphically killed, but there’s also an odd light tone sometimes to the story. The MC gets some pets, exploits the heck out of his inventory system, but takes the stealth class route. It's a good story with action each chapter and the MC doesn’t make dumn decisions to save people and play the hero and stays true to the Apocalypse part of the story.

Tower Climber (A LitRPG Adventure, Book 1)
by Jakob Tanner
Power up and climb the tower
A pretty exciting start for a tower climber cultivation novel. Some time at a climber academy, when he has encounters and he come back roughed up, he can always say You should see the other guy - If you can find the pieces...Still a low ranking climber. He has an OP talent. I like his female partner's pet. Off to a good start, I hope this series does well and continued. Good world and plenty of mysteries.

Sacred Cat Island
by Harmon Cooper
A magical time
I had a great time on Sacred Cat Island. Suitable for a younger crowd. It had an anime feel to it. Two young boys wandering around a community populated by retirees and cats. There are many mysteries to discover. It reminded me a bit of the town parts of kingdom hearts (without the combat). The nature of the world is hinted at. This isn't necessary to enjoy the adventure. A bit of danger. The pov of the book is the older if the two brothers. I enjoyed it. It did have a bit of a studio ghibli film feel. A bit of magic and mystery around everyday life. May the next book come out soon. This first book felt like a complete story. Light LitRPG mechanics that mainly track the growth of the main character. I'm looking forward to the audiobook release later this year.
Score: 8.9 out of 10
