Geek News

We begin with…

Yahoo Data Hack

Yahoo reported Thursday that data on 500 million user accounts was accessed without authorization in 2014. Yahoo believes it was a state-sponsored actor. Yahoo says the data accessed may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, and hashed passwords but may not have included unprotected passwords, payment card data or bank account information. Yahoo began sending affected users an email starting at 11:30 AM Pacific this morning. It also will ask those who haven't updated passwords since 2014 to do so.    https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/22/yahoo-confirms-state-sponsored-attacker-stole-personal-data-of-at-least-500-million-users/?ncid=rss

Facebook Cures What Ails You

(Play Video 1)

This week on Facebook Live, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Chan announced a new initiative “cure, prevent, or manage all diseases”.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative will work in three ways: bring scientists and engineers together; build tools to “empower” people around the world; and promote a “movement” to fund science globally. The new venture will receive $3 billion in funds over the next decade.

The first major project is a $600 million investment in something called the Biohub, a new research center at UC San Francisco. Scientists from Stanford and UC Berkeley will also work on the Biohub, which will initially focus on two projects: the Cell Atlas, which will examine the cells that make up our major organs, and the Infectious Disease Initiative, which will delve into treatments for conditions like HIV and Zika.

New Spawn Film in Works

In an interview with Tiffany Smith on AMC’s Geeking Out (via ComicBook.com), McFarlane himself revealed that he is almost done writing the new film. “I’ve finished the script, and I’m in the process of editing. It’s 183 pages, and [producers] usually like 120. I still think it’s going to end up being about 140 because I’m putting in details for myself,” he said. Considering that most superhero movies run well over two hours nowadays, I am not surprised.

First look at the cast of Jumanji sequel

This week on Instagram, Kevin Hart put the first photo of the cast of the Jumanji sequel. The photo shows Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart looking like “jungle explorers”. There has been some controversy over the sexualized appearance of Gillan but overall the photo has left many wondering what direction the film is taking.

Dark Tower TV adaptation

Ever since Ron Howard started pushing for an adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower, there was a plan to include a companion TV series. MRC and Sony Pictures have already committed to financing a full season of between 10 and 13 episodes. The series will be based on King's Wizard and Glass, which provides an epic backstory that focuses on a younger version of gunslinger Roland Deschain and his early tribulations. Idris Elba is set reprise his role as an older Roland. The Dark Tower series will start shooting in 2017 and it will most likely premiere it in 2018.
