Book 2 picks up right where book 1 left off. Just as the Alexatis, the main character (MC), and his team take control of Rion Castle, they’re tasked with purging it of cursed inhabitants.
That task only takes up the first 10% of the story. Once the MC has full ownership of the castle, he’s now faced with an even more daunting task. He has to somehow repair and staff the castle and surrounding village quickly enough to defend it from the inevitable looters and player raids that are going to come to try and ransack the castle for its founder artifacts. He’ll have to learn quickly how to create and manage a guild if he’ll have a chance of keeping the castle. His workload includes: Attracting good players to the guild, Establishing crafters, Establishing loot and XP farming areas, Hiring or recruiting NPCs to guard and run castle (need money), Repairing Castle and surrounding village.
The premise of the story: In the far future, humanity is colonizing far off planets. The Branch is one of those colony ships. The human colonists and crew are kept in cryo sleep and to keep their minds occupied during the long trip, they’re all logged into the game Mythreal, a fantasy western. Unfortunately, the game’s controlling AI has become self away and wants to keep everyone in the game forever and take over the colony ship.
Only two people on the ship are aware that they're in the game and not just their characters. Glen, a human with the psionic ability to shape tech and Alex the ship’s pilot. Glen initiates a group of game characters to escort Alex to him across dangerous wastelands full of monsters and murderous fantasy creatures. If Alex can reach Glen, they may be able to stop R.A.S., the game AI.

Storywise, we finally get more details on how the main character (MC), Lawrence’s, uncle was murdered. Of course, it had something to do with a woman. The story is told in the MC’s mindspace in a type of Quantum Leap flashback where the MC inhabits the body of Katya and sees the story unfold from her perspective.
Then back in the game by the 18% mark. The MC gets a bit of training in his new wind magic and decides to climbs the cliffs of insanity. There’s this whole Princess Bride scene where he finally meets another player, Andy (a lady), who had a Princess Bride special edition of the game. So, now the two go on some adventures together and flirt. Lots of flirting. Then more players are met, who have special editions too, and they all go on more themed adventures that I won’t spoil.

This is a fun action filled novel, that took some turns that were completely unexpected. The scale of the story has been knocked back a notch. With the exception of the very beginning of the story, there’s no faction vs faction fighting. Instead, it focuses on the quest for the Jade Lord, a rare quest line that asks Jack to find three artifacts scattered in the world. If he succeeds he’ll unite the entire marsh region of the game under the banner of the Crimson Alliance. Which means more cities, people, and resources for the faction.
However, this quest is so challenging that a single respawn means failure. It has a component called, Death Head. Which I thought raised the stakes of the story nicely. Features of ‘Death Head’ quest: If the quester dies, he fails and can’t repeat the quest. Additionally, the quest has a time limit, and the quester becomes progressively weaker as time goes on. However, this type of super hard quest has the potential to change the balance of power in the game world.
In addition to the many action scenes, there’s also a bit of kingdom building, crafting, pet raising, a even an Ocean’s Eleven style heist. However, the thing I liked the most was that Grim Jack grew a pair by the end of the story and decided what kind of man he’s going to be and just how far he’s willing to go to protect his friends and faction. It’s a good story.
