Geek News

We begin with…

Apple

This week Apple announced a number of new products. While we’ve been expecting this for months, here is what they announced.

  • iPhone 7

    • The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus have a redesigned home button that is now Force Touch sensitive, which will give people a little bit more control of the home screen. The new iPhone is also waterproof and includes a brand new camera that takes DSLR-quality photos. The iPhone 7 Plus model comes with a new dual-camera that gives the phone better zooming capabilities and depth of field settings.

    •

    • The new dual-camera system also uses machine learning to automate settings like focus, exposure, white balance, tone mapping, noise reduction, and even takes multiple photos and fuses them into one photo. The camera basically ensures you take a great photo every single time.

  • In a surprising design choice, Apple did not include a headphone jack on the phone. “The reason to move on comes down to one word: courage,” Apple SVP Phil Schiller explained.

  • Apple Watch series 2

    •

    • The Apple Watch Series 2 is completely “swimproof” with water resistance up to fifty meters. Apple redesigned the speaker system to help eject water from the watch after you take a plunge.

  • On the more geeky specs side of things, Apple introduced a 50-percent faster processor along with better graphics. It also comes with the brightest display Apple has ever made.

  • But Apple Watch: 2’s big feature is GPS, which helps make the Apple Watch somewhat less dependent on your iPhone—at least for maps and fitness apps.

  • The new Watch comes with a 35 percent bigger battery

  • Next up was app developer Niantic, which announced that its hit game Pokémon Go would be coming to the Apple Watch. However, this isn’t just a port of the mobile game to the watch, which would suck horribly. Instead, the watch works with your iPhone to incorporate the step counter seamlessly, so you don’t have to keep the app open.

  • New Headphones Airpods

    •

    • The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will ship with a pair of Lightning EarPods (i.e. ones that connect to the charging port on the bottom of the iPhone). The phoens will also ship with a Lightning-to-headphone jack dongle in the box, making it easier for your to retrofit any 3.5mm headphones you’re currently using.

  • Apple’s AirPods will have five hours of charge and the carrying case with have 25 hours of charge. You can pair the AirPods to your iPhone by simply opening the carrying case. The AirPods cost $159

  • Super Mario Coming to iPhone

Sony

The same day Apple made its big announcements, Sony also held a huge press conference and announced a few things too.

  • Playstation 4 Pro

    • The Playstation Neo, aka Playstation 4.5, is officially on its way. Renamed the Playstation 4 Pro, it has a whopping 1TB hard drive, and both the CPU and GPU have been upgraded. This console is the first from Sony to allow you to play games in 4K HDR.The PS4 Pro will be available November 10 for $399.

    • Can’t Play 4K Blu-Rays.

  • Playstation Slim

    • Also announced is a slimmer Playstation 4, which begins shipping September 15. Inside, the console is virtually identical to the current PS4, with the same ports, capabilities, and 500GB hard drive. It’s just much much smaller than the PS4, The PS4 Slim, officially just called the PS4, is available September 15 and will retail for $299.

First Look at new Mass Effect Game on PS4 Pro

(Play video 1)

During Sony’s PlayStation Pro reveal event, EA showed off the first proper gameplay footage of the new Mass Effect: Andromeda game. According to developers it’s best played on a 4K television.

The footage shows a character (presumably player character Ryder) exploring a not-of-this-world cyberpunk ruin also known as a cave. The character uses a jetpack to aid mobility and scans objects like plants for information. They also encounter some air squids that look kind of like miniature versions of Sovereign from the end of Mass Effect 1. Which is to say, like squids.

At the end, there’s a cut-scene in which the main characters find a holographic map revealing “vaults” spread across multiple planets. Then the place’s security system gets mad.

Shocker appears on set of Spider Man: Homecoming

This week photos of the electricity wielding villain Shocker on the set of the movie Spider Man: Homecoming have leaked. It had already been confirmed that villains The Vulture and The Tinkerer were already going to be in the film. Does this mean that there is going to be a Sinister Six type of villain gang that our friendly neighborhood spider is going to have to fight in the film? Or is this the case of the movie curse of more villains = worse movie?

Super Troopers sequel has begun filming

The comedy troupe behind the Super Troopers movie, Broken Lizard posted this week the first teaser photo confirming that filming has begun on Super Troopers 2. The comedy troupe raised over 4.5 million dollars on crowd funding platform, IndieGoGo, in April 2015 to make the movie themselves after fans demanded a sequel.

Joe Manganiello confirmed to play Deathstroke

Last week Ben Affleck released footage showing off the villain Deathstroke. Ever since there has been rampant speculation about where we’ll see the character and who’ll play him.

This week the Wall Street Journal has confirmed that Joe Manganiello will indeed play the classic villain!

DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns confirmed the casting in his first interview discussing his new role overseeing Warner Bros.’ movies based on DC Comics characters.

Johns is currently co-writing the script of the film with Affleck. He didn't say if Deathstroke will appear in Justice League, and he didn't reveal when exactly the new solo Batman film will be released, but it's expected to hit sometime in 2018.
