Koji Igarashi is best known for his work on the Castlevania games. He’s left Konami and is working on a new video game project funded in part on Kickstarter. The game is Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and is a 2.5D action game for consoles. Igarashi is going to enlist Inti Creates, the studio that did Mega Man 9 and are currently doing Mighty No 9, for development duties.
By Kickstarting the project Igarashi hopes to show publishers that there is a market for this type of game and eventually secure release of the game on all the consoles and PC.
Only a few days after the Kickstarter was began it has blown past its goal of $500,000. It currently has backers pledging almost $2 million dollars and almost a month left of crowdfunding to go.
One of the most ironic things about this story is that Konami, who owns Castlevania, told Igarashi that they didn’t want to make this type of game anymore because no one wanted to buy it.
