Geek News

We begin with…

Instagram launched two new features Monday for Android and iOS. First you can now send a direct video or photo message that disappears after the second viewing. And second, Instagram Live now lets you broadcast live video to anyone who follows you. The stream goes away when it ends too, no watching streams later. Instagram will only send notifications that you’re live to some friends while everyone else needs to notice the live tag on your Instagram Stories bubble. Instagram will also highlight the most interesting live streams in the Explore tab Stories section.

The features will arrive for users over the next few weeks.

An update to the Oculus Rift PC app coming December 12 will allow Xbox One owners to stream their games to the PC and view them in the Rift headset. The games will not be converted to VR but show up on a virtual display which has three modes, "Citadel," "Retreat," and "Dome."

Pokémon Go launched its new tracking system Tuesday alongside a Thanksgiving event double experience points and a new monster called Ditto. The tracker not only shows nearby Pokémon but a picture of which Pokéstop they are near. And to add to the incentive to pick up the game again, some Ratatta and Pidgeys may turn out to be Ditto in disguise. If that last sentence makes sense to you, you really should be playing the game if you’re not.

Deadpool 2 already has a new director! Following the recent departure of Tim Miller, who helmed the first installment, David Leitch is now the new man in charge. Leitch is one of the two directors of John Wick, a movie heavy on the action sequences.

We haven’t heard much news about the upcoming new Star Trek series set to hit CBS All Access next summer, Star Trek: Discovery, since it was announced that Bryan Fuller had sadly stepped down as series showrunner. Well, turn that frown upside-down because this time the news is amazing: actress Michelle Yeoh, known best for her roles in films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the Netflix series Marco Polo.

According to a new report from Deadline, Yeoh is actually set to play a different captain in the Starfleet. She has been cast as Han Bo, leader of a ship called Shenzou. Shenzou will supposedly play “a big role” in the show’s first season.” This means that Discovery’s lead character, a female Lieutenant Commander who simply goes by the title “Number One,” is still a mystery.

Chad Stahelski has lined up a new film franchise as well. Stahelski has officially joined the cinematic reboot of the Highlander films.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story about Stahelski’s Highlander, which may be his next movie after John Wick Chapter 2. “I’ve been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school,” said Stahelski in a statement to THR. “Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology. I can’t think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces.”

Angela Bassett has been cast as Ramonda, mother of T'Challa in the upcoming Black Panther film.

Legendary Entertainment, the team behind The Dark Knight, Godzilla, Interstellar, Pacific Rim, and many others, just picked up the rights to Frank Herbert’s equally legendary scifi novel, Dune.

“The agreement calls for the development and production of possible film and television projects for a global audience,” according to a press release.

Florence Henderson, the wholesome actress who went from Broadway star to television icon when she became Carol Brady, the ever-cheerful mom residing over “The Brady Bunch,” has died. She was 82. She died surrounded by family and friends, her manager, Kayla Pressman, said in a statement late Thursday.
